  Bunions

  What is it?
  • A bump on the outside of the big toe joint, which is actually the bone at the joint pointing in a different direction

  • Most prevalent in women

What causes it?

  • Arthritis or structural foot problems
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight, particularly high-heeled shoes

Signs and Symptoms

  • Inflammation, swelling, soreness on the outside of the big toe, and may eventually progress to cause overlapping toes

Prevention and Treatments

  • Prescription custom orthotics to help cushion and accommodate for the structural foot changes associated with bunions and help relieve discomfort
  • Special padding to offload specific problem areas of the foot, as well as bunion pads, shields, and night splints
  • Possibly prescription custom footwear, depending on the severity of the problem
  • Warming of the area and/or wax bath therapy to help relieve pain
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce inflammation
  • Avoid wearing high-heeled and poorly fitting shoes
  • Cortisone injections in the joint can help relieve pain and inflammation in some cases
