    called the metatarsal region

What causes it?

  • Inflammation of the joints and ligaments in this area from various conditions or pressure stresses
  • Shoes that are too narrow and high heeled shoes
  • High impact activities without wearing proper cushioning footwear or orthotics if one normally wears them
  • Age deterioration of the fatty pad on the bottom of the foot

Signs and Symptoms

  • Pain in the area near the big toe or in the mid-portion of the metatarsal region behind the second, third, and fourth metatarsal heads

Prevention and Treatments

  • Metatarsal pad to offload pressure and provide cushioning
  • Prescription custom orthotics to offload pressure, provide cushioning, and correct structural problems that may be causing the pain and inflammation
  • Footwear that is properly suited to your foot type. For an illustration of what to look for in footwear at your local shoe store for your type foot, click here. Your Chiropodist can provide further footwear advice; seek shoes with a rocker sole and wide toe box
