Arthritis is caused by inflammation in the joints and cartilage. With so many joints in the foot, it can be particularly problematic. The two best-known types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a deterioration of the cartilage while rheumatoid
arthritis is the more severe type and can affect people of all ages.
Painful swelling of the joints is often the first sign of arthritis. The skin may also be warm to the touch. Your family doctor or rheumatologist will run tests to confirm a diagnosis of arthritis.
It is important to seek treatment for arthritis right away to help avoid damage to bones and joints. Where arthritis of the foot is concerned, your chiropodist will work in partnership with your doctor. The biggest issue is the biomechanical changes caused by the altering of the foot's structure with the disease. Your chiropodist may employ special padding, modified or prescription footwear, and custom orthotics to help eliminate pressure points, alleviate pain, and achieve a healthier gait. He or she may employ foot mobilization therapy (FMT), anti-inflammatory drugs, and a home stretching regimen to help address pain and swelling.
Arthritis can lead to conditions such as bunions, hammer toes, claw toes, and painful nodules on the bottom of the foot. Biomechanical issues and pressure points may lead to increasingly debilatating joint pain, muscle pain caused by changes in the way you move, excessive callus build up, and corns. People with diabetes should be concerned about pressure points leading to skin breakdown and the formation of ulcers.
